Amsterdam Schipol International Airport (AMS) also known as Schipol Airport is the main international airport serving the city of Amsterdam and the largest airport in the Netherlands. It is located 9 km southwest of Amsterdam and is the third busiest airport in Europe in terms of passenger volume and the busiest in Europe in terms of Aircraft operations. It's one of the few airports in the world built as a single-terminal concept with one large hall split into three large departure halls. Schipol airport is a major hub for KLM and several other European carriers. The airport opened in 1916 as a military airfield and began to be used as a civilian airport after the first World War. By 1940 the airport expanded rapidly to four runways and larger terminal buildings. During the second World War the airport was captured by the Germans and was later destroyed by aerial bombardment. At the end of the second World War the airport was rebuilt, renamed and became the primary airport in the Netherlands.
