Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL) also known as Tullamarine Airport, is the main airport serving Melbourne Australia.  It's the second busiest airport in Australia with direct flights to 33 domestic destinations and to international destinations in the Pacific, Europe, Asia, North and South America.  Melbourne airport serves as a major hub for Qantas and Virgin Australia and is also used by JetStar Airways and Tigerair Australia as a home base.  Prior to the opening of Melbourne airport, the city was served by Essendon airport which was the designated international airport in 1950.  In the mid-1950's passenger volume skyrocketed at Essendon airport and the municipality was forced to seek solutions to meet the increasing demand for air travel.  Essendon airport was surrounded by residential districts and could not be expanded to meet the demand and a decision was made to build an entirely new airport.  In 1959 the government acquired land in the rural district of Tullamarine and construction of the new airport began in November 1964.  The new Melbourne airport opened on July 1st. 1970.
