ATL: Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport also known as Atlanta Airport, Hartsfield or Hartsfield-Jackson Airport is the main international airport serving Atlanta Georgia and the surrounding metropolitan area. Located 7 miles (9 km) from downtown Atlanta, it is one of the largest airport in the United States covering an area of 4,700 acres. It has been the busiest airport in the world by passenger volume since 1998 with over 105 million passengers in 2017. Hartsfield is the main hub for Delta Air Lines and a focus city for Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines. The airport site was an abandoned auto racetrack which was acquired by the city of Atlanta and on April 16th, 1925 and renamed Candler Field. A small airport was built on the site and the first flight from Candler field took off on September 15, 1926, the airport rapidly grew and became the busiest airport in the area by the end of 1930. During the Second World War, the airport was designated a military airfield and was used to service combat aircraft for the European War theater. At the end of the war, the airport returned to civilian use and was renamed Atlanta Municipal Airport. The airport once again saw rapid expansion and increased passenger and aircraft volume and became the busiest airport in the United States by 1957. In 1971 the airport was renamed William B. Hartsfield Atlanta Airport after the Mayor of the city. Later that year the name was amended to William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport.
