Robert F. Kennedy "Ripple of Hope Speech" in South Africa June 6th 1966

On June 6th 1966, Robert F. Kennedy delivered a riveting speech to the National Union of South African Students at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. The speech later became known as the “Ripple of Hope” which was quite fitting being that it was delivered on the University’s “Day of Reaffirmation of Academic and Human Freedom”. Much of his speech was focused on individual liberty, Apartheid, and the need for justice in the United States at a time when the American Civil Rights movement was in full swing. The speech shook up not only the political establishment in South Africa at the time but also had reverberations in the United States as well. The speech brought much attention to the Africa as a whole and emphasized the importance of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. It was widely praised in the media and is considered his greatest and most famous speech ever.
