Description
- ABOUT THE ITEM -
DTW: Detroit Metropolitan Airport is an international airport serving the Detroit metro area. It sits on 4,850 acres in Romulus Michigan, United States. The busiest airport in the state of Michigan, DTW is also one of the largest airline hubs in the United States with Delta and Spirit Airlines using it as a home base. The airport serves 30 international destinations and 39 states across the United States. In 2016, Detroit Metro was the 18th busiest airport in the United States by aircraft operations. In 1927 Wayne county began planning for a new airport. The following year the county board of commissions issued a bond to purchase the land for the new airport, construction commenced the same year and the airport was completed in 1929 and officially opened on September 4th 1930 under the name Wayne County Airport. With the outbreak of World War II, the airport became Romulus Army Airfield and hosted the 345th Air Transport Command. After the end of the second World War, the city of Detroit reacquired the airport and between 1947-1950, the airport saw rapid expansion with new runways and terminal buildings constructed. The name was changed to Detroit Wayne Major airport but as expansion progressed the city deemed it fit to rename the airport Detroit Metropolitan Airport in 1956.
