Edwards Air Force Base (KEDW) is a United States Air Force base located in Kern County California. The base is home of the Air Force Test Center, Air Force Test Pilot School and NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. Edwards is famous for Chuck Yeager's flight in the Bell X-1 that pioneered the crossing of the sound barrier. Edwards AFB started out as a US Army field but later became a full fledged Air Force base named in honor of Air Force Test Pilot Glen Walter Edwards (1916-1948).
